Virginia Woolf had decades earlier fought the same war, calling the middlebrow “sticky slime” and “a pernicious pest.” Clement Greenberg called it an “insidious” force that was “devaluating the precious, infecting the healthy, corrupting the honest and stultifying the wise.” Dwight Macdonald wrote the most famous attack in an essay called “Masscult and Midcult,” in which he blasted the “tepid ooze” of the Museum of Modern Art and the American Civil Liberties Union and summarized middlebrow culture as “the danger … the enemy outside the walls … the swamp.”
